“Remember, the future only comes one day at a time.” This quote by Dean Acheson, former U.S. Secretary of State (1949-1953), struck me as quite profound. I have always thought of the future as an extended timeline w-a-y o-u-t i-n f-r-o-n-t o-f m-e. It’s an infinite highway to an unexplored horizon. The future rarely feels like just one 24-hour period. And yet, isn’t it?
Decision time
Decisions are like that. Sometimes we think it took months or years to come to a decision. Other times it took only seconds. But in either case, the actual decision occurred in one day. Why, then, do we wait so long between decisions? Why do we spread them out? Is it fear? Maybe we don’t think we are quite ready? Or worse yet, deserving? We have 365 days in a year. Why not make 365 decisions, or even half that many! Dr. Barker tells us our self-awareness is not to be conditioned by time or space; there is no horizon, no 24-hour period, no expanse of years ahead of us. Further, “IT” [Spirit] is unconditioned by our past experiences. “It has not mortgaged its future,” says Dr. Barker. In other words, what IT can do for us is not tied to our past; IT doesn’t care about our past and certainly never kept score. Any separation from this fact is in our own mind, not the One Mind of Spirit [God].
