Spring Cleaning Your Thoughts

The February article from my Better Ideas for Better Decisions Newsletter asked, “Who’s Telling Your Love Story?” I addressed the idea of “thinking cleanly” about yourself, and I wanted to discuss it more here on the blog.

Thinking cleanly

I love this concept of thinking cleanly. Here is how it works. You and I have both an inner mind and an outer mind. Your inner mind gives you God’s best ideas for your use. Your outer mind encapsulates all you were brought up to believe. The outer mind can provide facts but also self-criticism. Thinking cleanly is about silencing the outer mind and living without criticism or judgement.

Rather than criticizing parts of ourselves, the better course of action is to say, “That part of me needs work.” What may need work can also be improved; that’s thinking cleanly. You are not wrong or bad when you believe something needs work; you’re looking at an aspect objectively and actively choosing to do something about it.

Enough Inferior Thoughts

So, it’s time to stop thinking you are not good enough, pretty enough, or smart enough. “Enough! Enough! Enough!” I say. It’s that time of year to start growing a whole new attitude. Now as the buds of spring occur and you undertake spring cleaning, throwing out old clothes, unused hotel toiletries, an overstuffed chair or china you’ve carried around way too long, consider spring cleaning your brain, too. Begin by discarding those old, worn out thoughts—the inferior thoughts and judgements—that no longer serve you. Begin your day with a spring declaration about what areas “need work” and start thinking cleanly about some area of your life you may be neglecting. Prune off the dead wood of old ideas to make way for fresh, new expressive thoughts. Allow sparkling, new ideas to surface from your inner mind.
